You've Already Paid Me
Heard this the other day on the Dr. Laura Show and I wanted to share it with you. She had it posted on her website...it is truly touching.
Dear Dr. Laura,
Today as I stopped for gas I noticed a young GI in Army fatigues trying to open his car door, obviously his keys were locked inside.
Upset that no one was helping this young man, I unloaded my two small boys and offered to use my AAA membership to have his door opened. He smiled and said “Thank you, Ma'am” with the respect that only the military teaches. We made small talk while waiting for the tow truck. I can’t imagine what thoughts were going through this young man’s head with war eminent, I would have locked my keys in the car, too.
His car door was quickly opened, keys retrieved. He asked me how much he could pay me.
Tears welled up in my eyes and I said “Son, you’ve already paid me by wearing that uniform.”
We parted ways. I hope that that GI’s chest sticks out a little farther and prouder today knowing that average Americans really appreciate them and support them.
My boys had a “parent teaching moment” on the way home about sacrifice, service and love of our country!
I hope when the time comes, my boys will serve this great country proudly!
Thank you for all you do to make this world a better place!
Sincerely,
Janet
